Tomato'r Misti Chutney ( Sweet Tomato sauce)

Tomato'r Misti Chutney( Sweet Tomato sauce)

A Bengali's lunch is incomplete without a sweet savor. We love our food more than anything else. Today's recipe is a simple yet super delicious to satisfy your sweet tooth. I have grown up having this sweet chutney prepared using tomatoes, ever since a tiny 2 year old who was fussy eater 😜.
Recipe
Ingredients
1. 4 medium sized tomatoes finely chopped
2. 3-4 dates finely chopped (optional)
3. 1/2 cup of sugar
4. A pinch of paanch phoron powder ( A mix of mustard, fenugreek, onion, cumin and fennel seeds)
5. A pinch of mustard seeds
6. A teaspoon of mustard oil
7. 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
8. Salt to taste

How to cook
In a flat bottomed pan add the mustard seeds and cover it. Once the mustard starts spluttering, add the oil and then add remaining ingredients. Give it a good stir and allow the tomatoes to get softened. Now add a cup of water, cover it with a lid and let it boil for 15 minutes on medium flame. Once the mixture gets a gravy like consistency turn off the gas and transfer it to a serving bowl, sprinkle a pinch of paanch phoron powder and allow it to come to room temperature. Serve it as a side dish for lunch or dinner.

Paansh

Paansh Today is the first day of ' Devipokho ' which marks the beginning of Durga Pujo. This is also the first day of Navratri. Every year we welcome Maa Durga with great love and eternal feeling. Pujo is not a festival for we Bengali's but an emotion. This year although the celebrations are minimal but our spirits are always high.  So, to begin the celebration, I picked up a recipe from one of the Bonedi Bari of Kolkata, Jagatjanani Bari where the temple of Jagatjanani was built by the Shaw family in 1871 and they worship an Astadhatu idol of the Mother Goddess. As part of their family tradition they offer "Paansh" to the Goddess during the spring season Durga Pujo celebrations. The traditional household Pujos of Kolkata are also known as Bonedi Bari Pujo in Bengali.
